Extractives General Counsel Forum Virtual
It was a great pleasure to host so many in-house legal professionals online for the Extractives General Counsel Forum Virtual in partnership with Africa Legal and Africa Oil Week.
The two half days of actionable insights and pioneering discussions added value on both a sector-specific and cross-sector basis. Helping legal services within the extractives’ community become key influencers, controllers, and stakeholders despite seismic changes in society. Some of our sessions included Green Financing, The Human Touch, March Towards Accountability and the Dinner Party Defence. All of which invoked a reel of engaging questions from the audience.
Thank you to our sponsor Fulcrum, speakers and everyone who watched for taking part in this year’s online Extractives General Counsel Forum.

What was on the agenda?
Day 1 - 29th June 2021

Same but different?
This session discussed the ‘ties that bind’ the oil, gas, and mining sectors in Africa. Answering the question as to why in-house legal communities across these industries have not traditionally networked and shared best-practice? And how will 2021 represent a ‘New Dawn’ in African extractives?
Daniel Driscoll, VP Legal & Compliance, Endeavor Mining
Frans Baleni, Chairman of Petro SA & Former Gen. Secretary of National Union of Mineworkers

March towards Accountability
Our panel dissected various approaches and options in handling the disclosure burden when it comes to the ESG, climate-related, financial, diversity and community impact. Plus, solving the question of how can the role of in-house counsels manage this?
Panellists include EITI, Natural Resource Governance Institute, Anglo American & Kosmos Energy.

Financing
The experts from AngloGold Ashanti, United Bank for Africa Plc and Absa Group analysed the important issue of green and sustainable financing for extractives operations. All whilst exploring green and sustainable operations and navigating the demands of modern-day financing requirements.
Day 2 - 30th June 2021

Dinner Party Defence
The panellists from Minerals Council of South Africa, Fulcrum, Vedanta Zinc International and Satarla evaluated how in-house counsels and their businesses should be looking at proactive solutions to the sector’s image problem.
Plus, how to ensure a lawyer’s involvement in a matter isn’t instantly perceived as evidence of ‘going defensive’ or aggressiveness by our community stakeholders, the press and society.

The Human Touch
The S in ESG is often to least discussed or analysed - this session explored this problem.
Our colleagues from leading companies highlighted that legal and sustainability departments work hand-in-glove to ensure maximum results and true benefit within the communities they serve.
Panellists included an Independent Lawyer, Ivanhoe Mines, Kalene Hill Resources & ICMM.

Renewable Energy in the Extractives Sector
